Hlatikulu Crane and Wetlands Sanctuary, Drakensbergs, South Africa ==> www.southafrica.net/za/en/arti….
Go Cranes Go!After snakes, geckos, and hippos, I thought we ought to visit somewhere completely different in this Journal. We were recommended to visit the Hlatikulu Crane and Wetlands Sanctuary in the Drakensbergs near our accommodation at Cleopatra Farmhouse, and this turned out to be one of the two most magical experiences of our vacation. This link http://www.southafrica.net/za/en/articles/entry/article-southafrica.net-hlatikulu-crane-wetland-sanctuary gives some further information, but a wider Google search is recommended if you want to follow this up. The sanctuary looks after and tries to rehabilitate the magnificent species of bird called the crane. There are three types: the blue crane which is the national bird of South Africa, the wattled crane, one of the most endangered of all bird species, and the crowned crane, one of the most spectacular looking of all birds.
