Victorian IR 5 Cape Conran

Description

A dramatic, even extreme, example of the Okavanga Technique, this shot was taken at Cape Conran to the east of Orbost in Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. The converted full spectrum Canon 40D had a x8 neutral density (ND) filter fitted to its lens. This renders the IR effect for foliage, but allows blue light through from the sky, there being little IR present in blue skies. In this case, the sky was pale blue and that comes through in the image, but the sea is an astonishing dark blue, much darker than the sky. I surmise that what is happening is that the sea is absorbing what little IR light is coming from the sky. The rocks are black from absorption of all light, and the foliage is a classic IR "white".
