Threave IR 1 by Okavanga Threave IR 1 by Okavanga
The Threave Estate near Castle Douglas in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland has the ruins of one of the most photogenic castles in all of Scotland - Threave Castle - former home of the most well known of the Black Douglases - Archibald the Grim. Even the path to the castle has an ominous feel to it.

Infrared from converted Canon 20D, B/W monochrome.

Great IR David
Yes there is an ominous feel to it, even to the barbs on the fence.

Many thanks - the power of IR is that you can work in whatever "colour" mode you like. B/W works well for this one.

Hi Brian - thank you very much. I was back there yesterday, but the weather was awful - rain and cloud - looked very dreich, as we say in Scotland.

Many thanks, Rachel. The clarity comes, in part, from this being an IR shot. The is often distance detail as IR light is not scattered as s much as visible. The emotion - well The clouds and contrast suggest a bit of drama.

Many thanks

This really does the job !!!
I actually prefer the B/W IR treatment for this type of landscape , sometimes the monochrome can distract from the composition . Not always of course , I enjoyed the Autumnal/sepia monochrome of Ladybrook !!

Archibald the Grim - what did he do to get that title ??Not wash ?

Glad you like it, Richard. I thought I'd work with B/W for this series. There is more to this shot than meets the eye and I nearly didn't post it. The problem is that the fields on either side of the pat have some texture in them, but only just. No matter what I did I couldn't get this texture and good exposure for the rest of the image - the texture just blew out. Eventually, I used a mask to keep that part of the picture as seen and the rest as seen. You can't see the join on this either. :D:

Richard - re Archibald the Grim - he was a hard man in history, but apparently fair in his rule over this part of the country. He was said to have a dark countenance and looked grim.
