For perching birds, nature has given us such dandies as the Birds of Paradise, the Resplendent Quetzal and others.  In the duck world there also some very fancy dressers (although no-one  calls them Ducks of Paradise), and in my opinion the Mandarin is at the top of the list.
Then you get a talented photographer like Okavanga taking a picture of one, and your jaw just drops!

That is so kind a comment, Goodwin. I was just in the right place at the right time. But, I agree, Duck of Paradise would be good classification for this species.

Cheers

What a beautiful and crisp capture!!

I've never even heard of this kind of bird; he looks out of this world with all his colorful plumage, such a beauty :)

Why, thank you very much for such kind comments. Mandarin ducks come from East Asia, but some were imported to the UK for private collections and zoos. Some of those escaped and there is now an established feral population in Britain. They co-exist quite happily with another common duck the mallard.

Cheers

Great shot, David!  Nice, crisp detail and colour contrasted with the soft flow of the mostly monochrome water.

Thank you, Brett. Lots of colour and contrasts. They are not native to Britain, see reply to comment above, but have become a favourite in parks.

Good point about the colour, Sheri. Some birds have developed extraordinarily complex colour and patterns of plumage. It would be hard to dream these things.

Many thanks

OMG!  Is that duck actually SAILING?
Reply
:iconokavanga:
Okavanga Featured By Owner Jan 27, 2017
Good point about sailing - those parts are known as sails and I expect on a breeze they would afford some movement, but as with all ducks the main mode of movement is paddling with webbed feet.

Many Thanks

David
