So! Who Wears the Trousers?Look away now, dear viewer, should you be of nervous disposition or uncomfortable with the facts of life, for this Journal is about SEX - the mating habits of lions. So don't say you weren't warned!
Before we get to the meaty bit, so to speak, we need to be clear about how lions organise themselves in the wild. I've already talked about the pride of lions that were disturbed by the leopard up a sausage tree. (Honest, they are called sausage trees - it is not an allusion to anything else...) Lion prides are based on a matriarchal society in which an alpha female along with sisters and several daughters of the sisters bring up cubs, and look after young lions, male and female, until they are about 3 years old. At that age, young males are forced out of the pride to fend for themselves and eventually take over by force another pride, or perhaps establish one of their own. Young itinerant females may try to join the pride, and sometimes succeed, thereby increasing the gene pool of the grou
