Infrared Victorian Fair and Fabrics

Salford hosted a Victorian Christmas Fair at the Salford Quays this weekend with local produce from the Greater Manchester area on sale, and with local worthies dressed up in Victorian costumes. This was an ideal setting for candid shots, and I thought I would explore how the clothes people were wearing would show up on my converted Canon 40D camera, fitted with a 720 nm infrared filter.

Image 6 - The lady is wearing, in the visible world, black from head to toe. However, these infrared images show that the black fur coat is striped - not real fur. The dark stripes are where strips of "fur" have been sewn together. Black boots and black tights are seen as pale cyan, while the fur hat and fur stole, black to the eye, are dark grey - probaly a different synthetic fur from the coat. However, it is possible that it is real fur that has been dyed. The handbag is black in parts. The lady's hair is blond, but shows no tell-tale blue cast suggesting that it may be naturally blond.

See Images 5 and 7 for further comments.

NB All candid shots are presented for their photographic interest and are not intended as personal comment on anyone or anything.
