Aussie Sky 3

Description

Apart from any limitations to the composition, this photograph should be studied by anyone interested in the technicalities of the polarisation of light. The image is a three shot pano, stitched with Hugin, over the basin of the little harbour at Metung, Gippsland in Victoria. Taken not long after dawn, the sun is directly off to my right-hand side, at about shoulder height. The lens was equipped with a circular-polarising filter (CPL), set for maximum effect. Looking at the sky, you see a cyan/blue on the left giving way to an intense but graded dark blue in the centre, and then to very pale cyan and almost blown "white" on the right. The way the central blue fades at the edges mirrors the leading edges of the jetty brining the eye along to the moored boats, and indeed the "black" square of the second to the left boat. The sky effect is a result of the CPL filter. The central portion has the maximum effect - hence dark blue with very little scattered light because it is taken at right angles to the sun - the optimum angle for the CPL to work effectively. While the left and the right shots are off that right angle and do not show the CPL effect. I would like to claim that I knew this was going to happen when I took the shots, but I cannot tell a lie - it was when I worked the images up that I realised what had happened. But,  a neat effect none the less.
